global refugee entrepreneurship summit: 31 October – 01 November 2019
On 31st October, the Centre for Entrepreneurs, supported by NatWest, hosted the 2nd annual Refugee Entrepreneurship Summit.
Following the successful inaugural summit last November with 80 attendees from 20 countries, this year the Centre convened 140 people for two action-packed days of knowledge exchange, networking and collaboration.

The Centre for Entrepreneurs has launched the first-ever global refugee entrepreneurship survey. Funded by FAIRE, this research will help understand the state of refugee entrepreneurship programmes globally. The survey is now closed and the results will be published soon.
global entrepreneurship congress: 15-18 April 2019
On 16th April, the Centre for Entrepreneurs hosted a panel discussion on refugee entrepreneurship as part of the Global Entrepreneurship Congress 2019 in Bahrain.
The Centre’s session, “Starting afresh: How entrepreneurship is transforming the lives of resettled refugees”, was chaired by the Centre’s director Matt Smith and explored the challenges and opportunities in nurturing entrepreneurship among resettled refugees. On the panel spoke Diederick van der Wijk (Refugees Forward) , Dr Michelle Richey (Loughborough University) and Julienne Oyler (African Entrepreneur Collective).
UNHCR Working Group on Resettlement (WGR) and Annual Tripartite Consultations on Resettlement (ATCR): 25-27 March 2019
The Centre was invited to contribute to the annual Working Group on Resettlement, organised by the UN High Commission for Refugees and the Home Office in Sheffield. The WGR is an annual meeting between the UNHCR, governments, NGOs, and international organisations to enhance the use of resettlement, identify and address challenges, and shape joint strategies and directions. The Centre co-hosted a panel informing participants about the power of refugee entrepreneurship.
international working group on refugee entrepreneurship: 20 June 2018
The Centre ran an international working group hosted by the Saïd Foundation. It brought together five world-leading refugee entrepreneurship programmes – from the UK, Germany, Denmark, Iraq and Australia – alongside representatives from the Home Office Refugee Integration Directorate and the UNHCR. Organisations for the first time had a platform to exchange best practices and to present government with tangible evidence on the potential of refugee entrepreneurship.
‘Starting Afresh’ – parliamentary report launch: 20 June 2018
To formally launch its report on refugee entrepreneurship and promote it among parliamentarians, the Centre held a reception at the House of Commons on World Refugee Day 2018. The event was co-hosted by Tom Brake MP and featured a panel of successful refugee entrepreneurs, moderated by The Times’ business editor James Hurley. The Centre briefed a further 20 MPs in one-to-one meetings.
