Global Refugee Entrepreneurship Summit

Global Summit 2018

On the 2nd of November 2018, the Centre for Entrepreneurs welcomed over 80 practitioners to its inaugural Global Refugee Entrepreneurship Summit. Refugee entrepreneurship organisations from 20 countries came together at the UK Government Department for Business, for a day of knowledge exchange, action and networking – and to launch the CFE Refugee Entrepreneurship Network.

Attendees comprised of philanthropists, investors, researchers, entrepreneurs, and of course refugee entrepreneurship programmes, such as: The Entrepreneurial Refugee Network (UK), SINGA Business Lab (Germany), DELITE LABS (Netherlands), African Entrepreneur Collective (Rwanda), Startups Without Borders (Egypt), 51 Labs (Iraq), the Turkish Entrepreneurship Foundation, Ygap (Australia) and the Entrepreneurship Support Program for Refugee Empowerment (Japan).

For the opening address, founder of Firezza Pizza and former refugee Edin Bašić drew from his inspiring story and experience of growing Firezza into a successful food chain. Attendees then heard from three leading organisations, as The Entrepreneurial Refugee Network, SINGA Business Lab and the African Entrepreneur Collective presented their best practices.

For the day’s panel discussion, the room learned about the latest funding solutions from five experts: Dr Michelle Richey of Loughborough University, who moderated the discussion, Hanna Wieten from DELITE LABS, Davide Libralesso of Etimos Foundation and Chris Clements, Director at Social Finance.

The day continued with three workshops on: designing and funding programmes; scaling and sustainability; and cross-organisational cooperation. The facilitated discussions in groups of ten allowed participants to dive into all details of their work.

The day concluded with the official launch of the CFE Refugee Entrepreneurship Network, to ensure that knowledge-sharing and collaboration will continue beyond the day.

CFE will reconvene the summit in 2019. Dates and venue will be announced by March 2019. If you are not a member of the network and would like to attend the 2019 summit, please register your interest below.
